| To me, the Canvasback is the most powerful and appealing of the duck varieties. I'll never forget the January day in the mid 60's when I was in my blind on Six-Mile Lake in the Atchafalaya Basin. I was alone on the lake on the last day of duck season. In the distance about a half mile away I could see a large flock of cans over the Atchafalaya River. I started calling, and to my surprise the flock began to come towards me. Before I knew it they were circling my decoy spread with the sound of wings breaking wind, getting lower with each pass. After about five passes over my spread of 75 decoys, the flock of around 300 cans dropped into my decoys like a jet plane with much noise and splashing of water. What a thrill! | ||||||||||||||||
