| On the shore of Currituck Sound stands the famous Whalehead Club that was built as a duck camp in the early part of the twentieth century. The elegant structure was built by a lady from the North East who was not permitted to join the male dominated duck camps on the sound, so she decided to beat them at their own game. Close by is the Currituck lighthouse which has stood as guardian of the waters for over 100 years. Currituck Sound was once the premiere waterfowl hunting spot of the East, but as many other places, now it is suffering for lack of birds due to the encroachment of man and habitat destruction. When I was on the Sound doing research for this painting, I saw many duck blinds, but few birds. |
