In the year 2002, I entered the Federal Duck Stamp Art Contest for the 30th time.  In previous years, I had come close to winning the contest, but had never been fortunate enough to take first place.  This time, I decided to go for broke, spending nearly six months on my entry in 2002.  With the aid of computer software, I created over 500 preliminary compositions in search of the unbeatable image.  I tried every composition imaginable, referring to thousands of photographs I had taken of wetland habitats and waterfowl over the past 30 years.  Fortunately, I found the right composition this time with this majestic painting of light.

Now that I have accomplished my goal of winning the Federal Contest, I can move on to other things, such as painting creative pictures for wall hangings and fine art purposes.  I have done very little of that over the past 20 years because of my preoccupation with and passion to compete in duck stamp contests.
